addiction has spread in the state law enforcement and policymakers should go all out to deal with the problem (Representational photo) Top News When I began my post-graduate degree in psychiatry two years ago I had imagined I would be sitting with a stethoscope around my neck behind a desk with the patient on the other side explaining psychiatric complaints to me calmly while I listened to them gently and wrote down prescriptions Instead as soon as I began my first year post-doc in my routine duties dealing with drug addiction patients — interviewing examining and counselling them — I found myself interacting with patients who were aggressive impulsive abusive and sometimes looked as if they would crush every bone in my body when they thought that I was not giving them the attention they demanded Share This Article Related Article Watch Video: What’s making news De-addiction involves substituting opioid and non-opioid medicines to the addict Patients complain demand higher doses some of them aggressively so This is all part of the withdrawal symptoms an inevitable part of the de-addiction process and it can lead to violent behaviour I was still a newbie when three patients attacked me and my colleagues while we were on our routine ward round The police personnel on duty intervened and saved us But in doing so one of the policemen sustained an injury and needed stitches on his hand The three patients who attacked us ran away from the de-addiction centre An FIR was launched and later I was summoned by the court to give evidence — an altogether new experience for me that filled me with fear and thrill all at once The patients and their respective histories have never failed to astonish me — how could a 12-year-old boy get hooked to alcohol and weed and then in a relatively short span of time shift to other severe types of addiction such as heroin I became aware of terms such as smack bhukki afeem chitta neela (capsules) panni (snorting) foil (drug user’s paraphernalia) teeke (injections) and several other vernacular terms used to denote different types of drugs and their method of administration The life stories of addicts revolve around their friends broken love affairs sexual encounters with a neighbour or a prostitute or a married woman to whom the patients attributed the reason for their addiction problems either partially or completely There have been disheartening moments as well especially when someone young died due to an overdose Once we received a 19-year old patient in an unconscious condition at 500 am He had a history of taking an injectible drug He had taken the drug a few hours before the incident and before my colleagues and I could do any resuscitation the patient expired The patients are mostly always in denial about accepting they have a problem Another big issue is how to deal with the family members of the addicts and clarifying the misconceptions they have about addiction First off they have to be told addiction is a disease and not a voluntary habit Second they believe alcohol and smoking are not addictions and it is only heroin that is problematic This too is untrue It is because of these myths that we find family members especially mothers and wives try to sneak in tobacco pouches for the patient Family members say: “Doctor saab ehda heroin da ilaaj kar do; sharab di sanu koi tension nai” Busting these myths is a daunting task by itself Considering the extent to which drug addiction has spread in the state law enforcement and policymakers should go all out to deal with the problem Perhaps they should rope in local communities through panchayats and NGOs apart from support from the local police As doctors we have also noticed an alarming spike in Hepatitis C Hepatitis B and AIDS among addicts Needle sharing among drug addicts is the chief culprit On the brighter side I have seen patients getting treated finding new jobs and mending their broken families This is what keeps August 3 2017 2:23 pm Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’s producer Kiran Shyam Shroff narrated at a recent press conference how two members of CBFCmade personal remarks against Kiran which reeked of blatant sexism to the extent of questioning her “womanhood” Related News Producer Kiran Shyam Shroff along with the director of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Kushan Nandy recently submitted her film to the Censor Board for certification Besides the “discourteous behaviour” of the board’s examining committee towards her and Kushan to their horror two of the members present during the discussion made personal remarks against Kiran which reeked of blatant sexism to the extent of questioning her “womanhood” She narrated the incident at the press conference held on Wednesday evening by the Babumoshai Bandookbaaz team in association with The Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) and several prominent filmmakers including Vikramaditya Motwane Abhishek Chaubey and Alankrita Srivastava spoke against the CBFC’s demand of 48 cuts in the Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer “After the examining committee watched the film they made us wait for one hour outside their office We knew by then that there would raise issues with the film Anyway we were called inside and I would really like to point out that these people lack basic decency The two hours that the discussion which was actually a one-way argument went for we were made to stand No one offered a seat or even a glass of water That’s how they treat filmmakers But what was more astonishing was that during the discussion a female member of the examining committee asked me ‘How could you make this film being a woman’ I replied ‘Why a woman can’t make a film like this’ To this a male member said ‘But she is not a woman She is wearing shirt-pants so how can she be a woman’ “Kushan and I were left shocked with his comment I felt like answering that even his female colleague was wearing shirt-pant so does that make her less of a woman But I stayed quiet because I didn’t want the argument to take a personal turn For the film’s sake I decided to not say anything” Kiran added Following Kiran’s revelation a lot of filmmakers present there opened up about their own humiliating experiences with the infamous board Abhishek Chaubey who went through a long-standing fight with the CBFC last year to get his much-acclaimed film Udta Punjab released shared with media persons that he was made to feel like a school boy who has done something wrong and needs to be punished “They make you feel like you are guilty like you are in class seven and you deserve punishment for doing something wrong Their behaviour is condescending towards us” Alankrita whose film Lipstick Under My Burkha saw the light of the day only after she approached the Film Certification Apellate Tribunal directed the CBFC to pass the film with an adult certificate said that it is high time that the power equation between the Pahlaj Nihalani-led board and the filmmakers was made equal “After hearing everyone’s experiences I want to say that we can’t have this lop-sided power dynamic between the board members and filmmakers Filmmakers need to be given equal powers as the board We need to talk like equals These closed-door meetings need to be done away with We should bring more transparency to what transpires between board and filmmakers” From expletives to kissing sequences Nihalani’s board has ordered 48 cuts in Babumoshai Bandookbaaz after giving it an adult certificate While the makers argued that if an adult rating has been given why are there any cuts required Kushan claimed that the CBFC’s argument making less sense says “Even kids below the age of 18 manage to watch such films in theatres so we can’t retain such scenes and words in the movie” Set in the rural landscape of Uttar Pradesh Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is about a sharp shooter Babu (Nawazuddin) The film is expected to (given that it gets certified) arrive in theatres on August 25 For all the latest Entertainment News download Indian Express App IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd More Related NewsBy Jai Deo Ranchi: The BJP might have dropped loved jihad from its political resolution in Uttar Pradesh but other Sangh Parivar affiliates are going full swing elsewhere to use it as a propaganda tool for communal polarisation In Jharkhand several right wing groups have picked up the cudgels for Tara Shahdeo a national gold medallist in shooting who has accused her husband of forced conversion With elections in the state not far off their interest in the case is seen to be guided by a political motive too Tara has accused one Ranjit Kumar Kohli of marrying her under Hindu rituals and later forcing her for conversion to Islam Giving a communal colour to what should be a matrimonial dispute follows a pattern of actions that has been put into effective use by the Sangh Parivar elements in other poll-bound states already The BJP has not made it a full-fledged political issue yet but others have started preparing the ground for it The VHP has expressed solidarity with her and demanded a CBI investigation into the ‘racket’ active in conversion of Hindu girls into Islam through marriageNational shooter : Tara Shahdeo Image courtesy ibnlive VHP state general secretary Ganga Prasad Yadav said: "Tara Shahdeo case is the second case of love jihad reported recently in Jharkhand Two months ago a similar case was reported in Jamshedpur We have requested the home minister to intervene into the matter and save carried out widespread rampage to demonstrate angst Sanjay Seth convener of Namomanta an organisation floated just before Lok Sabha election has advised all women feeling cheated by their husbands on the matter of conversion to be in touch with the organisation "We shall keep the identity hidden and work for their rescue from these jihadiats who have used the sacred platform of marriage for conversions" he said The political overtone in this ‘outrage’ over conversions is hard to miss Former Jharkhand Speaker and Ranchi MLA CP Singh staged a dharna before Kotwali police station on Monday demanding the release of all VHP supporters arrested for vandalism during Ranchi bandh and other BJP leaders have been supportive of the actions of the Sangh outfits in a calculated way This time a lot is at stake in Jharkhand for the BJP It has set for itself an ambitious target of 51+ seats in a house of 81 In the assembly election of 2009 the BJP and JMM had won 18 seats each and the Congress 13 RJD and JD(U) had won 5 and 2 seats respectively In the parliamentary polls held earlier this year the party bagged 12 of the 14 seats here a remarkable performance This however was attributed the Narendra Modi wave blowing across the country at that point With indication from across the country that the wave has subsided the party has to fight it out on its own strength now Obviously it does not want to take chances Being a national party ruling at the Centre it cannot resort to open polarisation on communal lines The Sangh Parivar outfits fit in here Coming back to the case the facts of it are still mired in confusion It has come to light that the father of Kohli alias Raqibul Hasan Khan was a Hindu and he is still alive While the police have filed cases under Section 498A 295A and 34 of the IPC relating to dowry atrocities and hurting of religious sentiments against the accused it is not yet known when did he convert to Islam or the conversion was effort was just a domestic matter or part of an organised racket Whatever the truth the case is likely to be exploited to the hilt for political reasons A similar strategy in western UP yielded rich electoral dividend for them recently and with the political rivals still in a quandary on how to tackle what is basically a propaganda tactic catering to the emotions of people the party is not going to dump it anytime soon Moreover the Sangh Parvar outfits are already active in the tribal areas of the state and they are well-entrenched among people It requires only an emotive issue to convert all that into votes
